_ After 57 years service with the Bedlington Coal Company, Mr.
William Coppin, of Alexander Terrace, Barrington Colliery, retired in January,
1934. He had a fine record of public service, and was a teacher and
superintendent of Barrington Colliery Methodist [Wesleyan] Sunday School for 53
years, church treasurer for 40 years, and was presented in 1931 with a diploma
to mark his half century of Sunday school service.
Starting work when only 12, Mr. Coppin helped to open Bomarsund Colliery. He had also been president of the Barrington Miners Lodge for 30 years and treasurer of the Anchor Trent of Rechabites for a similar period. Mr. Coppin also helped to found Bedlington Collieries Ambulance Van and Sleekburn and Barrington Nursing Association.
