_An accident occurred at
Choppington High "B" Pit on Wednesday, January 15th, 1890. It was 5 o’clock in the evening when a
young boy named John Tubby, aged nine years, son of Mr. Tubby, a banks-man at
the same colliery lost his life. As a set of empty wagons was approaching the
pit, Tubby and a companion attempted to jump on, but the little fellow, missing
his hold fell on the rails, and sixteen wagons passed over his body. When the
wagons stopped, his companion called out to him, and receiving no reply, he
thought Tubby had gone home.
As a result, the lifeless body, nearly cut in two, remained at the spot for nearly two hours, when it was discovered by the father and mother in their search to find their son.
