Letters written by these servicemen during their time at the Front Line are published here for the first time. They give a fascinating insight into the minds of these brave men and what their hopes and fears were. Some of the letters were written actually during battles in France and Belgium. Along with letters, there are poems composed by the men on the Front Line sent back to their families and friends. Eyewitness accounts of some brave actions are recorded in some of the letters.
Supported by photographs this booklet and indeed the remainder of the series are brought alive with graphic and solemn images.

Hugh Cairns V.C., D.C.M., Legion of Honour, was born in Ashington, Northumberland, England. His family moved to Saskatoon, Canada in 1911 and began a new life. Hugh enlisted in the army during the Great War, where his acts of bravery were quoted as being "Superhuman."
In this book you can read this brave mans life story. From his early life in Ashington to his heroic deeds in Valenciennes, France. Cairns was in the 46th Battalion, later to be known as the "Suicide Battalion," because of it's high casualty rate.
The story of this brave man's superhuman deeds began on Halloween night, 1918, when the Canadian's moved into position to mop up the Germans. Throughout the operation he fearlessly and with audacity performed prodigies of valor, personally accounting for over fifty of the enemy. His repeated exhibition of great courage and sterling leadership greatly contributed to the attack.
