Do you remember Billy Barker and his Dance Band ?
Billy Barker and his dance band were at one time a very popular combination at local dances, dinners and social functions. He was born at Barrington in 1873. He first assisted his mother in her newsagency until, as a young man, he acquired the newsagency of Mr. Lowther at Choppington. Assisted by his sister, Miss A. Barker, he steadily built up a wide connection in the Choppington, Barrington and Scotland Gate area and was actively associated in the conduct of the business at Francis Ville, Choppington, until 1938, when it was transferred to his daughter, Mrs. W. Pringle.
Though well known as a newsagent, he was even better known as a musician and, during the early 1900's, his services and that of his band were in great demand. Dancing was always a very pleasant form of recreation for Billie.
Sadly Billy Barker passed away in November, 1946. He was buried in Choppington Churchyard, the coffin being borne to it's last resting place on the shoulders of his two sons, son-in-law and his brother-in-law. At the graveside, the Rev. M. H. C. Haines, Vicar of Choppington, pronounced the committal prayers.
